Foam and a wash mitt on a car

4 minute read · Updated October 20, 2026

The wash, polish, and dry setup to buy first: a short-throw polisher, one pad and polish, a bucket that traps grit, and a towel that can actually dry a car.

A beginner kit fails in two directions. It is either a trunk of bottles you will not open, or it skips the wash and hands you a polisher on the first Saturday. The useful kit is smaller. You need a way to wash without grinding dust into the clear, a way to dry without dragging a wet hem across the hood, and one machine step for the light swirls that washing will not remove.

Buy that, use it on your own car twice, and only then decide whether you want a coating, a blower, or a second polisher. Prices move on Amazon, so this page does not list them. Open the current listing before you buy.

Wash without installing the scratches you plan to remove

Two buckets are the old advice, and they still work. One holds soapy water, one holds rinse water, and a grit guard in each lets dirt fall below the grate instead of riding back up in the mitt. A foam cannon is optional on car one. A mitt and a grit guard are not.

If you do want the foam shot — and if you are filming, you do — a cannon only foams when a pressure washer is pushing it. A compact electric washer is enough to learn the routine. Thicker foam comes later, with more water flow. Rinse the car, foam it, let the soap dwell, then use the mitt with almost no pressure. Straight lines, panel by panel, rinsing the mitt in the second bucket.

  • A wash bucket, grit grate, and soapy mitt

    Grit Guard Bucket Insert

A plastic grate for the bottom of the wash bucket so grit stays below the mitt.

    • The cheapest insurance against washing scratches into the clear
    • Drops into a standard 5-gallon bucket
    • Still worth using if you already own a foam cannon
  • A soapy wash mitt beside a car

    Wash Gear

The Rag Company Cyclone Ultra Wash Mitt

A microfiber wash mitt with a long nap that holds soap and releases dirt when you rinse it.

    • Safer on paint than a kitchen sponge
    • Rinses out in the bucket between panels
    • A known mitt, so replacement stock is easy to find
  • A pressure washer rinsing foam off a car

    Wash Gear

Sun Joe SPX3000 Electric Pressure Washer

A compact electric washer that shows up in a lot of first detailing setups.

    • Plug-in, so there is no gas motor to store in a small garage
    • Enough machine to run a foam cannon and rinse a car
    • Foam will be thinner than with a higher-flow washer — that is normal
  • A black car buried in wash foam

    Wash Gear

    Chemical Guys TORQ Foam Cannon

A common first foam cannon, usually the one paired with a Chemical Guys soap.

    • Inexpensive way to see if you like foaming before a wash
    • Fits the pressure washers most home garages start with
    • A reasonable beater cannon you will not baby
  • Snow foam covering a car in a garage

    Wash Gear

Adam's Mega Foam Car Wash Shampoo

A foaming shampoo meant for a cannon. Thick foam is the point; lubrication is the reason.

    • Designed to cling long enough to loosen dust before the mitt
    • pH-neutral style wash soap rather than a dish detergent
    • Easy to film — the foam shot is half the reason people watch

One polisher, one pad, one polish

Start with a short-throw dual action polisher. The pad oscillates while it spins, which is more forgiving than a rotary if you stop on a panel or tip the machine. The Griot's G9 is the machine I would hand a friend. The Porter-Cable 7424XP is the other honest answer if you find it for less and you like a tool with a long service history.

Pair it with a Lake Country polishing or light-cutting CCS pad and a bottle of 3D One. That combination is a one-step: it will not erase a curb rash in the clear, and it will improve a daily driver that has been washed with a sponge. Work a two-foot square, keep the pad flat, and wipe the residue with a clean edgeless towel. If the paint still looks hazy, you needed a finer pad or less product, not a second brand of polish.

  • A dual action polisher against car paint

    Dual Action & Rotary Polishers

Griot's Garage G9 Random Orbital Polisher

A short-throw dual action polisher that is easier to control on your first panels than a long-throw machine.

    • Calm orbit for learning pad pressure and section size
    • Widely sold with backing plates that take common 5-inch pads
    • Corded, so a full car does not depend on a battery
  • A person holding a corded polisher

    Dual Action & Rotary Polishers

    Porter-Cable 7424XP Random Orbit Polisher

The dual action polisher a generation of detailers learned on. Still a sensible first machine.

    • Proven short-throw design with cheap, easy-to-find parts
    • Enough power for one-step jobs on daily drivers
    • Simple speed dial and a shape people already know how to hold
  • Foam polishing pads stacked on a bench

    Pads, Compounds & Polishes

Lake Country CCS Foam Polishing Pads

The foam pad set most correction how-tos assume you own: cutting, polishing, and finishing densities.

    • Color-coded foams make it harder to grab a cutting pad at the finish
    • 5.5-inch CCS pads fit the usual 5-inch backing plate
    • Sold individually, so you replace the pad you actually wore out
  • Unlabeled polish bottles and a foam pad

    Pads, Compounds & Polishes

    3D One Hybrid Compound Polish

A one-step hybrid for daily drivers that need the swirls knocked down in a single pass.

    • Cuts and finishes without a second bottle on the cart
    • A favorite when you are correcting to coat, not to a show trailer
    • Less process to explain in a beginner video
  • Microfiber towel and spray on paint

    Microfiber & Drying Towels

The Rag Company Eagle Edgeless 500

A plush, edgeless 500 GSM towel for polish removal and a final wipe on clear coat.

    • No stitched edge to drag across soft paint
    • Plush enough for residue, not so huge that it is your dryer
    • Buy a small stack and retire them when they crust up

Dry it like the wash mattered

A drying towel is a tool, not a rag from the linen closet. The Gauntlet is large, twist-loop, and capable of pulling water off a sedan without you leaning on the paint. Wring it out halfway through. Keep a second towel for door jambs so the clean face stays clean.

Skip the ceramic coating on weekend one. A coating locks in whatever you left behind, including the holograms you have not learned to see yet. When the wash and the one-step feel boring, read the coating guide and buy a spray sealant first.

  • Thick drying towels on wet paint

    Microfiber & Drying Towels

The Rag Company Gauntlet Drying Towel

A large twist-loop drying towel that can take a sedan down with one towel if you wring it out.

    • Moves a lot of water without bearing down on the paint
    • Big enough that you are not dragging a wet corner back across the panel
    • The drying towel most beginner kits should include and then stop shopping

What to leave on the shelf

Leave rotary polishers, wool pads, and multi-bottle coating systems until you can finish a car without chasing a burned edge. Leave the ten-pack of mystery microfiber. Leave any wheel cleaner that does not say what it is, and do not dress tires until the face and barrel are actually clean.

Interior can wait for a single bottle of P&S Xpress and a towel that has never touched polish. If the carpets are beyond a vacuum, that is an extractor day, not a spray-and-wipe day.

  • Wiping dust from a dashboard

    Interior Cleaners & Extractors

    P&S Xpress Interior Cleaner

An all-purpose interior cleaner that professional detailers dilute and actually use every day.

    • Safe everyday cleaner for plastic, vinyl, and light dirt
    • Dilute it; the bottle is a concentrate, not a ready-to-waste spray
    • Does not leave the heavy greasy shine cheap dressings do
  • A compact vacuum on a car seat

    Detailing Lights, Vacuums & Air

    ThisWorx Corded Car Vacuum

A compact 12V-or-cord style car vacuum for cabin dirt, crumbs, and trunk sand.

    • Lives in the trunk for a five-minute reset
    • Crevice tools reach seat rails a shop vac hose skips
    • Not a substitute for an extractor on wet spills
