Best Ceramic Coatings for DIY

Water beading on a glossy panel

4 minute read · Updated October 20, 2026

Bottled coatings worth learning (Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light, CarPro CQuartz, Adam's Graphene) and the spray sealants to use when you want protection today.

A ceramic coating does not fill scratches, and it does not make a bad wash safe. It is a sacrificial, slick layer that cures on paint which is already clean. On a corrected, decontaminated panel it makes dirt slower to stick and water quicker to leave. On a swirled panel it makes the swirls slightly harder to deal with later, because you now have a coating to remove.

The split on this page is process, not brand loyalty. Bottled coatings have a flash time and a wipe-off. Sprays are a sealant you can redo. Pick the process you will actually finish in the space you have.

Prep is the coating

Wash, iron-remove if the paint is contaminated, clay or a synthetic clay if it needs it, then correct. The last machine step should be a fine polish, not a heavy compound you did not refine. CarPro Essence is a common last step when the coating that follows is CQuartz, because it finishes fine and wipes down clean. Any fine polish can play that role if you panel-wipe afterward.

Work in a garage if you can. Coatings want moderate temperatures, no direct sun, and no wind dropping dust into a wet film. Do one panel at a time until you know your timing. Practice the wipe on a test panel or a junk hood before the roof of a black car.

  • A coating bottle on paint covered in water beads

    Pads, Compounds & Polishes

    CarPro Essence Finish Polish

A finishing polish many coaters use as the last machine step before a CarPro ceramic.

    • Cleans up fine marks and leaves a surface ready to wipe down
    • Common last step before CQuartz in DIY coating threads
    • Finer than a compound, so it is the wrong bottle for wet sanding marks
  • Polishing liquids and a machine on a workbench

    Pads, Compounds & Polishes

    Meguiar's Ultra Finishing Polish M205

A fine finishing polish used to clear haze after a heavier compound, or alone on lightly marked paint.

    • Finishes down after M105 without jumping to another brand
    • Works as a light one-step on well-kept clear coat
    • Long working time compared with fast-flashing compounds
  • A wheel face being cleaned

    Wheel & Tire Care

Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus Full Effect

An iron-removing wheel cleaner that changes color as it reacts with brake dust.

    • The color change shows you where the iron actually is
    • Useful on barrels that a normal soap only turns gray
    • Rinse thoroughly and do not let it dry on the wheel

Bottled coatings for a first real install

Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light is the coating most often handed to a careful DIYer. It has a defined process, a wide user base, and a common follow-up in EXO if you want a slicker top layer later. You still have to level it. High spots are shiny smears you did not wipe in the window. If you see one after cure, you are into polishing, not into another microfiber pass.

CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 is the other standard kit. The UK 3.0 revision is the one to search for. People like it because the flash is learnable and the kit sizes match a single car. Adam's Advanced Graphene Ceramic Coating is the bottle to buy if you want the applicators in the box and you would rather follow one brand's video from wash to cure. The graphene label does not excuse a skipped polish.

  • Applicator and bottle on beaded black paint

    Ceramic Coatings & Sealants

    Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light

A DIY ceramic coating with a real wipe-off window. Prep decides whether it looks like the photos.

    • One of the coatings most often recommended for a first bottled install
    • Often topped later with Gtechniq EXO if you want a slicker finish
    • A multi-year product when the paint was corrected and the panel was clean
  • Tight water beads on dark paint

    Ceramic Coatings & Sealants

    CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0

A widely used consumer coating kit with a documented flash-and-wipe process.

    • Approachable timing for a first coating if you practice on a test panel
    • Kit sizes exist so you are not buying a shop liter
    • Pairs naturally with CarPro Essence as the polish underneath
  • Droplets sitting on a glossy clear coat

    Ceramic Coatings & Sealants

    Adam's Advanced Graphene Ceramic Coating

A bottled coating kit aimed at driveway installs, with the applicator included.

    • Packaged for DIYers who do not want to assemble a coating cart
    • Graphene marketing aside, treat it as a ceramic coating: prep still matters
    • A familiar brand if the rest of your liquids are already Adam's

Sprays, when the bottled process is the wrong project

Gyeon CanCoat EVO is a spray sealant with more credibility among enthusiasts than a generic 'ceramic spray' from the grocery aisle. You still apply it to clean paint, and you still redo it. It is the right product when you want protection this month and you park outside.

Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating is the widely available version of the same idea. It is honest about what it is: a fast spray, not a five-year coating. Use it after the beginner wash-and-one-step routine. Upgrade to a bottled coating when your panels look the way you want them to look for a long time.

  • Spray and a microfiber towel on a black hood

    Ceramic Coatings & Sealants

    Gyeon Q² CanCoat EVO

A spray sealant you wipe on. Easier than a bottled coating, and easier to renew.

    • No flash-timing anxiety on your first protected car
    • Useful as a topper when a full coating feels like too much commitment
    • A spray can lives in the cabinet for a Saturday refresh
  • Wiping a black car after a wash

    Ceramic Coatings & Sealants

Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating

The mass-market spray people buy when they want protection the same afternoon.

    • Fast to apply after a normal wash
    • Easy to find, easy to redo every couple of months
    • A sealant, not a substitute for correcting swirls first

After it cures

Read the cure window on the specific bottle you bought and do not invent a shorter one because the car looks dry. Avoid washing with strong detergents in that window. Afterward, the coating still wants the same grit-guard wash as bare paint. A coating makes a bad mitt slightly less disastrous. It does not make the mitt safe.

Tires, trim, and glass are separate. CarPro Perl on the sidewall, a dedicated glass towel, and no dressing on the coated panel. If a product says it 'boosts' a coating, it is a topper, and toppers are optional.

  • Washing the front of a black car

    Wheel & Tire Care

    CarPro PERL Coat

A water-based dressing for tires, trim, and engine plastics. Dilute it for the finish you want.

    • One bottle covers tires and exterior plastic if you mix two dilutions
    • Water-based, so it does not sling like a solvent dressing
    • Apply to the sidewall and keep it off the tread
  • A wash bucket, grit grate, and soapy mitt

    Wash Gear

    Grit Guard Bucket Insert

A plastic grate for the bottom of the wash bucket so grit stays below the mitt.

    • The cheapest insurance against washing scratches into the clear
    • Drops into a standard 5-gallon bucket
    • Still worth using if you already own a foam cannon
  • A soapy wash mitt beside a car

    Wash Gear

The Rag Company Cyclone Ultra Wash Mitt

A microfiber wash mitt with a long nap that holds soap and releases dirt when you rinse it.

    • Safer on paint than a kitchen sponge
    • Rinses out in the bucket between panels
    • A known mitt, so replacement stock is easy to find
